Eve's Story

On outreach early one morning, we saw Eve (real name not used) packing up her sleeping bag and possessions. She was crying as she organized her things to get ready for her day ahead on the streets.

We approached her and asked if she was okay. She told us she had unexpectedly started her period during the night. She had no money and no sanitary products. Eve was also suffering from back pain and cramps.

“I’m worried people will smell me” she said, “even though it’s all in my head”.

Eve told us that in the past she had used folded up toilet roll or socks as makeshift sanitary pads. She said she felt worthless and humiliated because she was homeless and unable to take care of her own body.

We told Eve about the local day centre and walked there together. Eve was able to access their showers and get breakfast and a change of clothes, as well as sanitary products.

For the homeless, their period can be a humiliating, painful and financial burden.
