A whole year of giving – what we achieved in 2022

We’ve had an incredibly busy year here at Simon on the Streets. From continuing our outreach work come heavy rain, blistering shine or ice and snow, to a number of incredible events – 2022 has been a wonderful year.

However, it hasn’t been without its challenges. As the cost of living continues to soar, more and more people are at risk of homelessness and need our help. Throughout the year, your support has been invaluable.

Keep reading to take a look at everything you’ve helped us to achieve in 2022, and why your support is more important than ever.

Being there for those with no where else to turn

During 2022, we worked hard to provide a voice to those facing homelessness, helping them to get the support that they need, whatever that may be.

Because homelessness comes in many forms, there is no one size fits all solution. Our work isn’t simply about finding a safe and secure place for those we support to stay, it goes much further than that, aiming for real and sustained change.

The stories of Anthony and Peter are the perfect examples.

Anthony*

For some of the people we work with, accessing the healthcare they need can be difficult. A few months ago, our outreach workers accompanied Anthony to his two cataract surgeries.

After his operations, he can now see everything sharply, and read or write without any problems. In his own words, “finally I can see the faces of my support workers who helped me”.

Peter*

The work we do means that we have to be aware of a number of different social and political issues, and the very real impact they have on individuals like Peter.

Peter was sold by his mother to a man who brought him to the UK, where he was then forced to work 7 days a week for no money. Together with Hope for Justice, we helped him start a new life free from modern slavery.

Our fantastic fundraisers

As a charity, our events are absolutely vital when it comes to raising awareness and much-needed funds. Time and time again we’re blown away by the number of people who without fail, choose to come and support us and our events. This year has been no exception.

Simon’s Big Sleep Out

After a two year break due to the pandemic, our flagship fundraiser returned in October, bigger and better than ever. And what a success it was.

With over £27,000 raised, it was our most successful Sleep Out to date.

We’re still so overwhelmed by the support, and we can’t thank all of you enough. From every person and business who took part, to our sponsors, and corporate partners. It’s because of you that we can continue supporting those facing homelessness.

Simon’s Starlight Ball

We rounded off 2022 with our Starlight Ball at the stunning Queen’s Hotel in Leeds city centre. The Lord Mayor of Leeds joined us for the evening, and we’re very grateful that we were chosen as one of his nominated charities.

With a silent auction, live music, and a beautiful three-course meal, it was great to see all of our supporters coming together in one place to raise funds and reflect on a year of success. We genuinely can’t wait to do it all over again.

Although our events are done for the remainder of the year, there’s still time to take advantage of the incredible fundraising efforts of Fazenda in Leeds. Throughout December, Fazenda restaurant will be donating 50p from every cocktail they sell to Simon on the Streets. What better way to get into the festive spirit!

As 2022 comes to an end, we’re so excited for what 2023 has in store. However, 2023 will also bring new challenges, and there’s no doubt that we’ll need your support. Take a look at how you can get involved here, and have a wonderful New Year!
